In the App-apalooza poll, a third to a quarter of respondents indicated they have paid app subscriptions, variously: to avoid ads, for extra functionality, and to support the developers. About the same number (34.1%) have no paid app subscriptions.

For myself, aside from Netflix which I think of as a TV app despite often watching on my phone too, until I started my current language-learning fiesta, the only app I paid for was Lexulous (online Scrabble), to get rid of the ads. Now all bets are off.

In ticky-boxes, paleontologist moles and "why do we even have that lever?" tied for second place with 38.6%. Hugs won with 72.7%. Thank you for your votes! ♥

Reading
Same as last week: Brothers in Arms by Bujold, read by Grover Gardner, and some chaptered graded stories in beginner Chinese, including a fairly sinister one about self-aware cellphones that want to control humanity and take over the world. (I'm finding this quite gripping and have to keep reminding myself that previous chaptered stories have not wowed me with their endings.)

TV
Andrew and I are ploughing through Mobius (Cdrama), a SF crime thriller feat. ground-hog day-esque time slippage, an obsessed scientist, and bioengineering research run amok. The short (relative to Kdramas) episodes go by very quickly. We have two episodes to go.

Pru and I are still watching May I Help You (Kdrama), and my sister and I are still watching While Collar (hi, Sara!) and Bluey.

In solo watching, I'm 10 episodes into a frothy office noona romance called Find Yourself, in which a small company's 32-year-old executive, who has never dated, falls for a hunky young intern who's very into her. No one in this show thinks of anything but romance, and the intern is a bit pushy in a trope-y kind of way, so this is not a rec per se. But the show has the tone of a mid-range Kdrama romcom, something like The Woman Who Want to Marry, and I didn't know I could get that from mainland China, so I'm eating it up. I like the webs of relationships and friendships. The age-appropriate second lead is self-involved and manipulative, and I'm very much relying on him staying the second lead.

Audio entertainment
So much ChinesePod. One episode of Cross Party Lines, one episode of Dream Against the Machine ("Weapons of Math Destruction, with Cathy O'Neil", who herself is a cohost of another podcast, AI Skeptics).

Online life
I haven't been around much -- sorry! Aside from the Guardian slo-mo rewatch, I'm spending all my time on Chinese apps on my phone. Also, I'm up to seven open windows of tab clutter, help!

Life/health/mental state things
We've having a cold snap (it's currently 5°C here (=41°F), feels like 0°C (=32°F) /that was yesterday). It even snowed briefly on Tuesday, a rare enough event that it made the news headlines. Last time it seriously snowed here, someone made a Facebook page called "the day it snowed in Wellington".

I'm not getting enough sleep; there's always the temptation to do just a little more Chinese before I go to bed. But if I don't start enforcing bedtimes, the wheels are going to come off. I spent yesterday learning politeness terms (服务员，请帮我打开这瓶酒，谢谢) in a total zombie state -- will any of it stick? (Update: I wrote that yesterday; last night I got a super early night, so my brain is more or less back online. It feels good.)

House
The oven has been delayed. Expected delivery is now mid-late September, boo. :-(

Language Learning
I feel like I've been in training for this for the last 15 years: Korean, cryptic crosswords, online puzzles. It's a lot of the same skills, and so addictive. Otoh, I am doing zero flashcards or vocab acquisition outside of the apps, which means I'll hit a wall at some point (just like I did with French at school, and Korean). And I need to overcome whatever's holding me back and interact with a live person to get a proper handle on tones, because I don't think I can figure them out on my own.

I am spacey tired. Lack-sleep stupid. My thermostat is broken. I have been waking up in a slime of sweat at about one o'clock and just being awake until dawn. I have such sympathy for parents of tiny children. (But they know what's wrong - they have a wakeful baby and if the baby sleeps, so will they. I don't know what's wrong; I feel as if my mind is as war with my body and I want it to stop.)

Other things

Himself made me a gin & tonic with double gin. He then realised that the gin was cask strength, but I was ever so slightly pissed. And we et moussaka from freezer, so no one had to cook. Moussaka is the perfect comfort food - soft & creamy - and the aubergine had been cooked down until it just melted away in the mouth.

I have spent the evening reading book reviews on reactormag etc. and then checking to see if local library has a copy, and adding books to wishlist for library / bookshop.org Because I was following links down various rabbit holes, I have ended up with books which are so not SFF (I now want to read A Distant Mirror by Tuchman).

Tomorrow I will go for a stupid little walk for my stupid mental health and pick blackberries.

good news, i've been able to successfully export sylvie's rp blog, and im going through hideki's right now. im tempted to make them as obsidian vaults OR try out quartz; i think itd be a cool archive thing to have my rp blogs up to be viewed if tumblr ever combusts, esp since they're also integral to both hideki and sylvie's character development

kinda sucks that my main blog does throw an error when exporting ... hopefully with the new update it might be fixed??? sucks that my other big blogs are doing fine, but the big BIG blog is having issues, and is the one i want most badly to archive bc it's 14 years of me--AUGH fuck ok hideki's also throws the same error, but his blog got in a lot further than mine

matsushima: What book(s) made you want to be a writer?

I read Shannon Hale's books as a teen, which is why I love heroine-led fantasy (my debut novel that I published with a small press is a heroine-led fantasy and not a romance).

Also, I used to think there was nothing new under the sun until I read The Vet's Daughter by Barbara Comyns and went on to read a lot of other mid-century women writers, who I credit for showing me that you can always write something original and strange and totally you. Which partly influenced my writing of my small press debut.

More recently I've been loving Stephanie Burgis's books and writing indie cozy fantasy romance because her books cemented my love for the genre.

soricel: How do you define cozy literature, and what draws you to it?

When I think about the definition of cozy literature, I think about this bit from an interview with Susanna Clarke:

Clarke has begun work on a new novel—one that she doesn’t mind talking about. It will be set partly in Bradford. “It’s an anti-horror novel,” she told me. Which means? “Horror novels have this idea that there’s a kind of secret at the center of the world. And that secret is horrific.” This, Clarke observes, “isn’t much of a secret, really.” Anyone can look around at the world and see that. “So this would be more about the fact that, at the center of things, there’s a secret or mystery, and it is joyful.”

She wasn't describing cozy lit here, but her description matches my idea of cozy lit.

I define cozy literature as stories in which the secret at the heart of the world is joyful.

As for cozy romance, I like Casey Blair's definition: she says it's a romance in which the people involved feel 1) safe and 2) seen. I've embedded her interview below.

I am back from my trip and still catching up on things, but here's a book!

This fantasy novel is set in a world called the Stillness—called that ironically, because it's actually wracked with seismic activity. Massive earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis are constant threats, causing human societies to backslide or collapse every few centuries. Certain special people called orogenes are born with the ability to magically harness and channel tectonic energies, and with training they can stop these catastrophic events—or cause them. The book opens with an orogene doing the latter, and then zooms out and rewinds to show both the consequences of his actions and the events that led up to them, moving between plotlines and characters that initially seem separate but eventually intertwine.

I had mixed feelings about this book. I did really like the worldbuilding and the creativity of the tectonic magic and how it was portrayed. I love it when fantasy writers show what it viscerally feels like to do magic and what the costs and risks of it are, and that aspect really landed for me here. (And as a person who grew up on a faultline where earthquakes were a part of life and there was always an undercurrent of wondering when The Big One was coming, I was probably primed to be enthusiastic about the specifics.) I also thought the interweaving story structure was executed well and never confusing.

My hesitation is mostly around the power structures of the book and what it seems to be saying about them. Orogenes are feared and hated, and authorities try to keep them contained and oppressed, controlling them using counter-magic as well as physical and psychological abuse. The book's position is that the orogenes should not be treated this way, and I agree. But the thing is... unlike oppressed people in real life (to which the author seems to be comparing them), orogenes have the power to destroy the entire world. That's the whole premise of the book! Fear of orogenes is rational in a way that real life xenophobia simply is not. So what solution is being proposed here? Later in the book it's suggested that perhaps orogenes should be in charge of the "stills" (mundanes) and the implication seems to be that this would produce a stable utopia, but, uh... yeah, I dunno about that.

But this is only the first book of a trilogy, and I'm invested enough to continue, so I guess I will just wait and find out where the story lands.

I have had depression for most of my life, and I have shared my struggles with my brother in many phone calls over the years. Recently, I heard laughter in the background, and I asked him if I was on speakerphone. He told me that I am always on speakerphone — that his family likes to listen to see if I will say something stupid. That pretty much ended our phone calls. When I tried to elicit an apology from him, he said I was overreacting. Still, I miss the feeling of closeness I had with him. Thoughts?

It’s so disappointing when people are needlessly cruel. I hope that when you asked your brother for an apology, you explained how hurtful it was to learn that he had violated your privacy for laughs. I’m afraid that whatever sense of closeness you felt was not truly reciprocated. You may want to consider a different kind of relationship with your brother. But I would save your confidences for someone more compassionate.

Transformative Works and Cultures seeks an assistant editor as part of building a leadership pipeline for the journal and in the field more broadly. TWC is an international peer-reviewed Diamond Open Access online publication about fan-related topics, promoting dialogue between the academic community and fan communities. As an Internal Complaint and Conflict Resolution (“ICCR”) volunteer, you will play a key role in maintaining fair and respectful interactions across the Organization. Your work will include reviewing, investigating, and adjudicating complaints, and mediating conflicts. Our team is also in the process of refining the OTW’s policies to create a more effective and inclusive volunteer experience. Our goal is to serve as an objective, neutral party for personnel-related issues to help resolve situations with compassion and equity.

Volunteers & Recruiting Volunteer

Are you great at admin and enjoy the satisfaction of completing short tasks and ticking them off to-do lists? Or do you have experience in CRM or database software, data privacy, managing software access, or other related areas? Volunteers & Recruiting is looking for additional volunteers to help our busy team!

Volunteers & Recruiting supports the Organization for Transformative Works as a volunteer-driven organization by ensuring that volunteers are in the right roles, at the right time, with the right tools.

We recruit and manage incoming volunteers, handle exiting volunteers, handle all committee set up as well as chair and board turnover. We help answer volunteers’ questions about the OTW or the tools we use, or direct volunteers to the right places. We set up tools for committees and subcommittees, mentor volunteers in their work, and track the service of each and every volunteer throughout their time with the organization. We ensure that every volunteer in the organization has the resources they need to complete their work efficiently and effectively.

This recruitment round we’d especially love hearing from applicants who, in addition to helping out with our day-to-day case work, are interested in developing and maintaining documentation (including tool tutorials, committee policies, and our volunteer handbook) and collaborating on committee projects. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a live text-based chat interview.
